What’s the Big Deal About the Resurrection?

studentblogpicBY DR. MARK SEWELL

Imagine for a moment that you are in a conversation with a Buddhist and he just found out that Gautama Buddha, their founder, was a fraud and did not really exist. Then in the same conversation another friend confirmed that he is changing his belief as a Muslim because documents have surfaced to prove that the prophet Mohammed never existed. Your friends’ entire belief systems and even their worldviews would come crashing down, forever to be changed.

Now consider, if you are a Christian, how you feel about the bodily resurrection of Jesus. If your friends denied the resurrection of Jesus, would it have the same impact on your faith as the above scenario did on your friend’s faith? Is it really a big deal? Consider all the other points of the Christian faith that would still exist.

If you question the resurrection of Jesus, then in all reality your Christianity is dead. The central figure of the Christian faith is Christ. The bodily resurrection is a key factor in worshipping the living and active savior of our broken world. Throughout the entire Bible, the redemptive story of Jesus is illuminated. His life, His crucifixion and his resurrection is the Gospel personified.

Consider these two scripture references:

1 Cor 15:3-5 “3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” NIV

Rom 10:9-10 “9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” NIV

If you removed the fact that Jesus was raised from the dead, there would be no power over death. There would be no supremacy of our Lord and Savior. There would only be a dead person rotting in a grave. The resurrection is key. It is a key factor for you and I to know that when we die, our eternal destination is known because Jesus lives!

Do you believe with your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead? Do you believe that Jesus was buried and was raised on the third day? There is no other formula for salvation. There is no other way to salvation other than what is contained in the two verses that we are talking about.

Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead and you WILL BE SAVED!

Please let me know your thoughts and if you want to know more about my Jesus who lives because it is a very big deal for your life!
